  • The three wires act to carry the 12 volt power to all the controllers and modules, together with a communication signal.
  • This signal carries digital information, usually from controllers to modules.
  • When a controller is operated it sends digital signals to all the modules which specify what type of module is to respond to the controller, the identity of the module and what the module is being requested to do.
  • The signals are ignored by all except the identified module, which sends a message back along the same communication wire to confirm that it has received the instructions and acted upon them.
  • All modules and controllers have an identity or 'address' set by links on the circuit board.
  • Controllers and modules are 'joined' by matching their addresses, so if several controllers and modules of the same type are fitted in a system their addresses will determine which controller works which module.
